Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) from Glentress Forest near Peebles, Scottish Borders (by mikeyscope)

During the last solar maximum as a result of a very active sun the solar wind gave rise to spectacular auroral storms overhead as far south as Northumberland, this one photographed from the settling ponds in Glentress Forest near Peebles.
Glentress & Cardrona forests used to be a bit of an astro-haven for those interested in the night sky but in more recent years mountain biking and housing developments with associated light pollution have forced astronomers away from the area towards the Border Forest Park, Kielder Forest Park …& Galloway Forest Park.
Nikon FM2n / 28mm lens f2.8 / Exposure 20 secs / Fujichrome Provia 400F film.

  29. "…the Dauphin cares for and loves her like his sweetheart, and it is easy to see that God has caused them to be born for each other."

    - Anne de Montmorency, constable of France, in a letter to Marie de Guise on 30 March 1549

"…happy intimacies of their charmed upbringing at the French court […] Since the first moment of their meeting at St. Germain in October 1548, when the five-year-old Scottish queen had been solemnly presented to the four-year-old dauphin of France, and King Henry II had rejoiced over the immediate love which the children felt for each other, Mary and Francis had never been apart for more than a few months at a time. They had thus been united by over twelve years of continuous friendship and companionship, and all that happy memories…"
